Controlling the Centerline

Most of the body's vital areas are in the center or slightly off center. If you draw a line from between the eyes straight down to groin this is defined as the centerline. It includes the eyes, throat, heart, solar plexus, belly, & groin. These areas must be protected while attacking your opponent. Most Wing Chun techniques target these areas on your opponent.

Only one object can occupy a space at one time. If you occupy your centerline before your opponent occupies theirs, not only do you protect yours by being there first, but your opponent can't defend his simply because you are already there. It's a king-of-the-hill game. Women's elbows are constructed to have a wider lateral angle to give their forearms more clearance from their hips. If you compare men & women with their palms up & hands extended with pinkies side-by-side, women's elbows will generally be closer together than men. This is clearly an advantage women have over men in the practice of Wing Chun. Violate this rule & you will often be hit or techniques will not work as intended.
