916/973-9191Wing Chun is a variety of Kung Fu developed by a Buddhist nun 400 years ago to neutralize the advantages of trained & experienced martial artists. Today these advantages work well for people who want to defend themselves but prefer not to spend a lot of time training in martial arts or physical conditioning.
Wing Chun has only three hand forms, 2 weapons, & the wooden dummy form. For the student, it can be a rapidly progressing system of learning. It was designed to train people to be proficient in self-defense in a short period of time. It's classified as a soft style which means that it tries to take the attacker's force & either reflect it back to him or redirect it to get the attacker off balance or out of position. It tries to not fight force with force.
Wing Chun's principles set it apart from other martial arts.
1. Sensitivity
2. Proximity
3. Economy of Motion
4. Controlling
the Centerline
5. Borrowing Energy
This is not a comprehensive list, but gives primary examples of Wing Chun's tactics.
Students of other martial arts can also benefit from Wing Chun by studying its principles & concepts to supplement or modify their own practices or tactics.
Wing Chun is the first martial art studied by Bruce Lee under the tutelage of Grandmaster Yip Man. Bruce incorporated many of Wing Chun's theories into the style he later developed: Jeet Kune Do. Bruce didn't complete his training in the Wing Chun system, but you can by studying Sifu Chong's series on CD.
